Throughout our interview, unpeeling the Pacino onion revealed layer after often conflicting layer. Really understanding the man in those shoes is another story. It’s only fair that now he’s allowed to be comfortable in his own shoes. And with good reason: over decades of performances on both screen and stage, Pacino has brought life to cops and killers, drug lords and detectives alike. As he sits in the classroom of his longtime friend, journalist and UCLA professor Lawrence Grobel, he smiles and looks more contented than his haunted character in the Godfather films ever did. Perhaps he was drawn to the brand’s self-proclaimed “ergonomic Italian styling” – the actor is nothing if not a proud Italian, though he’s certainly much more than that. At least they’re all black, matching his more fashionable slacks and suit jacket. And yet, in walks Al Pacino wearing the comfy, unsightly sandal hybrids. At his most casual, the Mafia godfather might, perhaps, don a pair of loafers. Though he’s sent plenty of people to sleep with the fishes, Michael Corleone wouldn’t be caught be dead wearing a pair of Crocs. With Ocean’s 13 in theaters now and his box set out today, it seemed like a good time to finally post it. Grobel, the journalist behind famous interviews with Marlon Brando and Truman Capote, among others, garnered our class a sit-down interview with Al Pacino.
